This Morning - Andy on the Sofa with Nicki
Two days after Andy Scott-Lee's surprise departure from Pop Idol he and Nicki Chapman met up with Philip Schofield and Fern Britton on ITV1's This Morning sofa.
"It's ridiculous! The public have gone mad!" ranted Philip, who couldn't understand how Andy could leave so early. The show became a debate, "why did he go?"
Nicki believed people thought he was so safe they didn't need to vote: "On Saturday night he was good, there's people were far worse than him, so why did he go? He has supporters; he's got a fan base, so we think that they just thought 'oh he'll be fine'".
Up till now Andy had been sitting quietly, almost forgotten. Fern apologetically brought him into the conversation: "Tell us what it was like that night?"
"I was happy with my performance" Andy said, but added that nobody was comfortable 'doing Disco'. "Maybe people didn't vote because they thought I was safe, I don't know really...I was shocked because, personally, I didn't think my performance was the worse on the night. It just goes to show these days, it doesn't really matter what the judges say, because if they do say 'you're brilliant' I always thought ...people would vote for you if the judges say you were great. It goes to show even if they don't say you're great, people...they might feel sorry for you and pick up and call."
Philip wondered if the internet campaign to oust Andy because of his professional past had an effect on Saturday's vote. Nicki pooh-poohed the idea, "because we have such a large volume of calls, I don't think they could make a difference."
On the up-side, Fern said she thought the preview of the Christmas single (Happy Xmas - War Is Over) looked fabulous and Andy revealed that it will be released on 15th December. Place your bets now for the Christmas No 1!
Looking to the future Andy happily reported that since he's been out he's had some people calling and wanting to work with him. "To be honest I didn't enter the competition to win, I didn't ever think I would win because of the whole background...I just hoped I'd get as far as I could and then get something from it."
Interestingly, later in the phone-in part of the show Andy was asked what the chances were of him reforming 3SL (Andy's old boy-band comprising himself and his two brothers). He didn't discount the possibility; there will surely be tons of interest in them if they do regroup.
Whatever happens a determined Andy declared "I'll be coming back, promise, I'm just gonna keep on knocking until I get in."
