Michelle Goes Straight To Number One!

Monday 12 January
As expected, "All This Time", Michelle McManus's debut single entered the UK charts at number one yesterday.
Nobody expected her to break Will Young's phenomenal record for Anything Is Possible/Evergreen, however she did book an entry in the Guinness Book of Hit Singles by being the first Scottish lassie to have a number one debut single.
Yet another round of congratulations for Michelle; not least from Jack McConnell, the Scottish first minister who told the Scotsman newspaper "I am absolutely delighted for Michelle. She is an exceptional talent and I hope this is the first of many successes she has in the coming years." Michelle told the paper "It feels absolutely amazing, I'm still in a dream-like state."
Since the final 'Michelle' has been really busy laying down her new album and promoting her single on all the top pop shows.
This Friday Michelle made a talking appearance on the All New Top of the Pops show. She gave a hint of her future musical direction, describing it as pop "with a bit of an edge" and mentioned Sugababes and Dido as potential influences on her future style.
Yesterday she sang on both Top of the Pops Saturday (TOTPS) and CD:UK. On TOTPS Michelle shared light hearted banter with presenter Fearne Cotton and gave an excellent performance to camera.
On CD:UK she thrived on the feedback from the live audience, and there was added excitement in the air as we waited to see if Michelle topped CD:UK's own chart.
Early in the show Michelle joined Sean Paul and Lost Prophets singer Ian Watkins on the Hotshots Review bench. Cat Deeley asked her if she felt nervous about entering the pop arena at such an uncertain time. Michelle admitted that she did but was philosophical, "If I give 150 per cent, if I'm not here in 6 months time then it's not going to hurt anyone is it?" The teenage audience gave her a supportive cheer.
At the end of the show we were treated to a live performance from an elated Michelle, but not before Cat announced that Michelle had indeed bagged her first CD:UK chart number one.
Encircled by enthusiastic fans, Michelle sang with a well earned smile on her face.
Her young admirers were enjoying the moment with arms aloft, swaying like branches in the breeze.
Michelle too was enjoying this moment, it must have seemed a distant dream when she walked into her first Pop Idol audition, but today the words of the song rang truer than ever…
"All this time, we've come a long, long way, I've waited a lifetime for today, I'm praying this moment's here to stay."
…and so are we Michelle!
