Pop Idol Michelle - Interview with Nina Nannar (ITV News)
Three days after Pop Idol victory Michelle McManus gave an in-depth interview to Nina Nanaar the Media and Arts Correspondent for ITV News.
Despite only managing 3 hours sleep since the final Michelle was as perky as ever as she updated Nina on how she has been adjusting to the life of a pop idol.
She revealed that she found being interviewed on GMTV and This Morning a surreal experience. She was amazed at how small the studios are and also found herself thinking "should I not be on the other side watching in, as opposed to kind of looking out?"
When asked how she is dealing with the media attention Michelle said she was "learning to deal with it an awful lot better…now as opposed to when I first entered the competition".
Michelle seemed more concerned about how her parents have coped with the press. "I think my family are still struggling with it, because of course they're not media trained". She spoke of when her mum called her to say there were 15 press cars lined up outside the family home. "Mum was like 'Oh we're barricaded in, we can't get out!' I said mum you can go out. You just go out the door, just don't worry about a thing, just take your time…but they understand, they know what's happening."
Michelle was gracious in victory. When Nina Nannar commented that people generally viewed her as the rightful winner Michelle heaped on the praise for runner-up Mark "It's a great compliment you know, but I really feel that Mark (Rhodes), he really was fantastic on the night and I think it went right to the wire for Mark and I… I can guarantee it's really neck and neck… he's such a lovely guy and you know I think "She's like the wind" I'd defy any female out there who didn't go…(gasp) 'heartstrings being pulled', he was fantastic.
Michelle's size has been a hot topic in the media; nearly every article on Michelle makes a reference to it. Faced with this onslaught she has always maintained a refreshingly positive outlook. She said she was pleased that she was now starting to see more comments about her voice, a trend which she hopes will continue more and more.
On whether music industry pressure would force her to change her image into that of a more conventional pop idol Michelle was adamant, "If I change it's going to be for me. I'm a very strong person…I'm in control of everything I do. I won't change for anyone, that's a guarantee."
And who could argue with her, she's been herself right the way through Pop Idol, natural and with no airs or graces. Michelle knows who she is, and thankfully, so do we!
