World Idol - The Christmas Show

The judges for the World Idol showed little respect for the fact that this time each of the contestants was already a beloved Idol in their home country, they were just as nasty as ever. Maybe that's their nature.
It was an interesting contest with lots of different singing styles represented and comic relief provided by the caustic comments spurting from the mouth of the Polish judge.
Each country's version of World Idol will have been edited to adapt to the target audience and to cope with the fact that the public may only vote for contestants not belonging to their own country. What follows is an account of the Christmas show as it was screened in Britain on Christmas Day.
This is how the contestants lined up. Click on a link below to see how your favourite fared on the night...

Alexander topped a field of 20000 entrants to win Germany's 'Superstar' competition.
He has good superstar credentials, en route to the final he was told he performed better than Robbie Williams and his clean-cut boy band good looks sent many a young fraulein into frenzy.
Since winning the competition Alexander's had a platinum album and a debut single that sold to 1.1 million of his admirers.
His latest single "Free Like The Wind" is from the soundtrack of a German Gladiator film and Alexander was the first World Idol Gladiator to be thrown into the ring of fear for the Christmas day show.
Alexander gave a really energetic performance, perhaps 'dancing like he's never danced before'. Bounding around the stage like that made it hard to always hit the right notes, but did Alexander hit the right notes with the international panel?
Kuba Wojewodzki (Polish Judge): Because my English is not brilliant, I have a note for you. It sounded like Karaoke in the Old Pensioners House. (boos) ...[Kuba makes a garbled comparison to Guns and Roses] ...you're dancing awfully, you're looking like a caricature of Michael Jackson, I got a symbol of 'loser' from my country to you. ( He displays a Polish red and white striped tie) Thank you.
Alexander (smiling) Thank you very much.
Ian Dickson (Australian Judge): I don't want anyone ever to tell me again that the Germans don't have a sense of humour, because...(claps)...that was a comedy routine I'm afraid. (groans and boos)
Shona Fraser (German Judge): I just think this may be a little bit too much testosterone in this jury and maybe the people weren't actually paying attention to what you were singing and the fact that you chose an uptempo song, and you didn't make it easy for yourself. It's easy to show that you can sing with feeling if you sing a ballad.
Pete Waterman (British Judge): I think you're right actually. I think there is too much testosterone flying about here, but unfortunately I think they've picked the wrong guy to defend, because you weren't really paying attention to what you were singing, which is a pity.
Simon Cowell (US Judge): Okay, without being rude, it was terrible...(mixed reaction from audience)...fact!
Alexander Everybody sings a ballad tonight and I wanted to show something different, that the audience have a good show and it's very difficult to show it in 2 minutes...
Simon Cowell (US Judge): No Alexander, listen, this is 'your' world showcase
Alexander I know.
Simon Cowell (US Judge): All I'm telling you...there is not a cat in hell's chance of you winning this competition based on that performance, because it was horrible.
Alexander OK. That's your opinion.
Simon Cowell (US Judge): Sorry, but it was.
Alexander OK.
After performing a perplexed Alexander spoke to camera. "I think the judges are very hard, they are fighting against eachother, "who's the coolest judge?"...I don't know why, and I just came to say that I'm satisfied with myself, I hope the audience liked it and I can sing a ballad...then I'm sure that Simon Cowell will say something good too.

Guy is the most recently crowned idol in the World Idol competition. The Australian Idol contest only came to it's climax last month. Guy has a distinctive Afro hairstyle and an equally distinctive and soulful voice.
It's easy to spot Guy's supporters, they all look like him as they sport their Afro wigs, and unfortunately they don't all sound like him.
As he calms himself down for a perfomance Guy enters what he calls 'Grooveland' and he certainly gave tonight's performance some of that groove. He was confident and relaxed as he sang on stage, and even stepped off it to shake the hand of a man in the audience whilst singing the lyric "I see friends shaking hands, saying 'How Do You Do'", the boy's got style!
Zack Werner (Canadian Judge): Well, while I really hated that arrangement, and I'm not sure that it gave you as much room to show off exactly how good you really are. Between the crazy lid, the great smile, you come off like you're from down under, like down under Memphis. I totally bought into that. That was great.
Guy: Thank you, that's very kind.
Ian Dickson (Australian Judge): I can't begin to tell you how proud I am to be with you representing my adopted country in my homeland, just showing off what I think is one of the best talents I've seen in a long time. Go with the flow. (cheers)
Pete Waterman (British Judge): Singing's about entertaining people and you certainly entertain people. I think it's a great song and I think you did it a good version.
Guy: Thank you.
Pete Waterman (British Judge): Will you win this competition? I think you're in with a strong chance young man!
Simon Cowell(US Judge): If I hadn't seen the competition and then I read or saw in the newspapers the following day a picture of you which said "World Idol" I'd be a bit puzzled.
Guy: Sure.
Simon Cowell(US Judge): Because you do look odd! But maybe that's a good thing?
Guy: (smiling) Thank you.
Simon Cowell(US Judge): Well done!
After hearing the judges comments Guy commented, "I went on there thinking, 'I don't really care what they say, because I'm here singing and I love singing and it's about...it's really about what people at home are getting out of the performance. It's Christmas and I wanted to bring some joy, because it's kind of not been that way so far!"

Former Aviation student Diana has flown in from Jordan and she is the only World Idol contestant who isn't singing their song in English.
Back in August 2003 Diana was victorious in "Superstar" the Arabic version of Pop Idol. The programme was screened in 22 countries and was a great success across Arabia. The Jordanian people got right behind Diana and gave her tremendous backing leading up to it's finale.
When she won she celebrated by simply singing a song called "Ala Babee Wa'if Amaren" (In English: "On My Doorstep stands two Moons")
Diana's mum creates all her costumes and in her long flowing dress Diana certainly graced the World Idol stage with some style.
She sang beautifully, but how would the western judges react to the very different Arabian style of music that she offered tonight?
Henkjan Smits (Dutch Judge): I think your target audience will be too small to become a World Idol. However, I think it's very brave to sing a song in a language that most people in this audience don't understand, and I want to pay respect for that.
Pete Waterman (British Judge): I personally love Eastern music. I love it, but for somebody to come here to sing in a completely different way I think is very brave, and I think it's great entertainment and we should all have a little bit more.
Diana: Merci. (cheers)
Simon Cowell (US Judge): I actually wouldn't have a clue whether that was any good or not.
Pete Waterman (British Judge): (To Simon: ) Don't you like it?
Simon Cowell (US Judge): No, but I do think she has a good voice. Erm...(To Diana: )...will you win? No.
Pete Waterman (British Judge): (To Simon: ) But does that matter in this case?
Simon Cowell (US Judge): No, no. (To Diana: ) Because I'll tell you what you did do...you stopped this competition so far from turning into a worldwide glorified karaoke competition and I salute you for that! (applause)

Jamai only entered the Dutch "Idols" competition because his mum forced him into it. He felt the judges wouldn't be interested in a bespectacled chappie.
Indeed, at his first audition there was debate on whether he should go through. Henkjan Smits won the day for Jamai, "I think this boy has charisma" he declared, and the Dutch public obviously agreed.
At his second audition Jamai thought he'd messed up his chances by forgetting the words to Ricki Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca" but the judges were forgiving and his charisma pulled him on through to the final stages.
Each week Jamai gave the viewers a different spectacle, and some different spectacles! Ironically, those goggles that so much put him off auditioning have turned out to be part of his trademark.
For the Christmas World Idol show Jamai was covering a song made famous by his own bespectacled idol Elton John, but would the judges see eye-to-eye with his performance?
Zack Werner (Canadian Judge): Well I think 'sorry' might be a good place to start, because I'm kind of sorry about having to witness that performance. While this is an amateur singing competition, I felt that was absolutely rank amateur. (boos)
Kuba Wojewodzki (Polish Judge): I feel like an international assassin killer for hire, to kill your talent and enthusiasm. I can do this because I don't see a great talent or enthusiasm. Thank you. (boos for Kuba)
Pete Waterman (British Judge): I'm amazed because I don't think you're that bad kid! You're not bad at all! (cheers) You can come around to my place and sing for me any time son. (Jamai laughs) You're alright by me, you're not that bad! (more cheers)
Simon Cowell (US Judge): Jamai, the show is called, with respect "World Idol". It was O.K. as a good amateur. Uhmm...but what I'm looking for today is somebody who is 'unique'. There is nothing unique about your voice. (groans) So put yourself on a world stage...it didn't work!
Jamai looked a little dejected when he reflected on the comments he'd received, "Maybe I can be a World Idol, I don't know, maybe not, we'll see...I try to be.

Heinz graduated from an eventful South African Pop Idol contest (M-Net Idols).
It was a contest plagued with allegations of racism and vote rigging. There were even allegations in the press that one contestant was spending over $600 a day voting for herself! On top of all this the show's presenter Matthew Stewardson had to resign in order to check into drug rehab. Exciting stuff!
Since winning the South African 'M-Net Idols' competition in September 2003 Heinz has had Platinum success with his first single "Once In A Lifetime" and he followed this up with a hit album entitled "One Step Closer".
Heinz has also been a hit with the fairer sex; he has been declared one of South Africa's sexiest men, featured in Cosmopolitan's 2003 calendar and tagged with the label "Hunky Heinz". Will Christmas World Idol 2003 be Heinz's date with destiny?
Kuba Wojewodzki (Polish Judge): The only thing that is keeping me here is a gravitation force, the market value of the pound and the fact that my plane leaves tomorrow. It's absolutely not my cup of tea! (groans and boos)
Ian Dickson (Australian Judge): Heinz, I think that song needs a bit more of a dirty approach, frankly. So I'm not sure it's a great song for you. I've heard a lot of rubbish spoken on this panel tonight about this being a singing competition. It's not a singing competition, if it was it would be on radio. It's about visuals as well and you have got film-star good looks, you're a perfect pin-up and I think did a good job, you need to find the right songs though.
Pete Waterman (British Judge): You look great! I just wish I was on whatever the Polish judge is on! (cheers)
Simon Cowell (US Judge): You tick all the boxes; nice voice, good looking boy. What you don't have, which is what the Australian boy had, is 'natural charisma'. That's your problem.
Heinz: Thank you! Thank you judges.
Heinz was philosophical about the judges' feedback, "You know realistically I feel er...you know I'm not that happy about what some of the judges had to say, of course, I mean they were very blunt and 'to a point', and some of them were negative points...And I think here and there some of the stuff had merit and I should listen to it and, you know, build it into my singing career in the future."

She's the baby-faced baby of the bunch. Alicja won the Polish 'Idol' competition when she was just 16. Now, 18 months down the line and with a hugely successful debut album under her belt she performs on World Idol using her preferred pop-name of "Alex".
In 2004 Alex is expected to represent her country in the Eurovision Song Contest singing her latest single "I'm Still Alive" and it was indeed a very lively Alex who bounced onto the World Idol stage hoping to impress the judges.
Shona Fraser (German Judge): You know you're tiny, you have got a massive voice, which I'm not sure you know exactly what to do with it at the moment. But you've got an even bigger personality and it's a pleasure to watch you and I think you're going to have a big career ahead of you.
Alex: Thank you very much.
Kuba Wojewodzki (Polish Judge): (In Polish: ) If I say something bad, your family will shoot down my plane home...
Alex: (In Polish: ) My family won't need to - before that, the Idols will shoot you! You need God's help now...
Zack Werner (Canadian Judge): (To Kuba: ) Is this going to be like an hour long special...or...?
Kuba Wojewodzki (Polish Judge): Yeah (nods as Alex smiles broadly)
Alex: Okay, I told him "You need help of God now, after this, what you told the other Idols." (Glaring at Kuba: ) I hate you! (cheers as a defeated Kuba sinks into his seat!)
Pete Waterman (British Judge): You're completely barmy! Completely over the top!
Alex: No, I'm not!
Pete Waterman (British Judge): You are, and if you'd just calm down for 10 minutes we could probably see how talented you are! You're as bad as him! (referring to Kuba) Must be something about the water in Poland!
Alex: Noooo! No please, not like him!
Kuba Wojewodzki (Polish Judge): Thank you, thank you Alex, thank you!
Simon Cowell (US Judge): (Makes an unimpressed gesture)
Alex: Thank you very much! (Laughing, as she gestures to leave)
Simon Cowell (US Judge): Well there's nothing for me to say. I mean there's nothing constructive I can say, I mean you're out of your depth...erm, Poland will love you because you've been in this competition, but you will be one of the eleven winners who will be one of the ten losers now. That's it!
Alex: (arms outstretched) OK! I'm happy I'm here now with you and singing!
Simon Cowell (US Judge): Good for you.

Ryan has good pedigree, not only is he from a musical family (he's been performing with the family band since he was 12) but he also went to the same High School as one of his own idols, Ms Avril Lavigne.
He's still adjusting to life as an Idol, having only won the Canadian Idol competition in September 2003. It's got to be a change from waitering at the family restaurant.
He's been compared to Buddy Holly, but mainly in terms of looks, (he has dark hair, wears glasses and of rangy stature) his voice is all his own.
Ryan suffered disappointment along his road to national stardom. He didn't automatically make it through to the final stage, but was selected by the judges for a wild-card show and made it on his second-chance ticket.
Since being crowned an Idol Ryan has enjoyed Canadian chart success with his debut single 'Something More'. Could that 'Something More' turn out to be World Idol success?
Zack Werner (Canadian Judge): To me you bring it night after night, direct from your heart. That's you! You sing with great tone and to me with great charisma and you should be proud of the job you just did bro!
Ryan: Thank you very much. Thank you.
Pete Waterman (British Judge): It's interesting you've improved tremendously since we saw those auditions. It's just I think sincerity was just a little missing.
Ryan: Thank you.
Simon Cowell (US Judge): I thought I was going to see tonight about five or six amazing undiscovered singers. All I'm seeing is a lot of people like you who are adequate with a sort of quirky personality. So what?...Sorry.
Ryan: (unimpressed) Don't be!
Simon Cowell (US Judge): ...but you're big in Canada!
Ryan took a bow and blew a kiss towards the judges. Backstage he vented his feelings, "You know...I had fun! I think that you know, we're all very talented and whether or not we make it internationally is definitely not up to those panel of...you know, they're not even real judges, I don't think they went to school for that did they?

Kelly has had fantastic success since winning the first American Idol competition. Her double A-sided debut single "Before Your Love" - "A Moment Like This" broke Billboard records by making the biggest leap to the No1 spot. (It was a record previously held by The Beatles!)
Before entering American Idol, Kelly had spent sometime in Hollywood persuing her dreams of musical stardom. When things didn't work out she moved back home to Burleson, Texas and found work as a cocktail waitress.
She's a down to earth kind of girl and seems unphased by success. Her personality and humour came over during her first audition when she suggested that she and American Idol judge Randy Jackson trade places!
Bookie's favourite Kelly has already found success across the world and has now sold over 2 million records. It's hard to criticise someone with success like that, unless of course you're a World Idol judge!
Zack Werner (Canadian Judge): You know you have an amazing natural tone, that's a given obviously, and we all know that. I do have to say that around the edges we get into some serious what I would call 'shouting with tone' and when you're really going to compete head to head with the great R & B Divas, with Alicia Keys, with Christina, with Aretha...it aint all that!
Henkjan Smits(Dutch Judge): Kelly, it's impossible to say anything negative about this performance. This is how Carole King meant this song to be and you've got one of the most stunning voices I've heard in the last couple of years. Brilliant!
Kelly: Thank you. Thank you very much.
Jan Fredrik Karlsen (Norwegian Judge): When you sing, for me this is quality. You have a fantastic voice, strong, it has a personality to it...and you deliver it great on stage, with a fantastic look. I think you really are a true star! Thank you so much.
Kelly: Thank you.
Randall Abrahams (South African Judge): Kelly, I imagine that Carole King has two things to be very thankful for. Aretha Franklin is one of them and I think you're the other.
Kelly: Oh! Thank you. (laughs with surprise) ...thank you.
Pete Waterman (British Judge): Now Kelly, there is no question about how good your voice is. The thing that drives me nuts about you...and it does drive me nuts!...All those trills and frills...you can sing you're...
Kelly: No, you're like my mom. My mom hates when I trill so don't worry! I hear it all the time at home.
Pete Waterman (British Judge): Yeah, well there you go.
Simon Cowell (US Judge): Er, Kelly it is pointless me telling you how good you are because you've already proved to be a world star. I will address this to the Canadian judge, "You're not fit to judge this girl, you don't know what you're talking about." This girl is a star and I don't know why we're bothering even commenting because it's like comparing what we've seen tonight, you...donkeys to a racehorse!...It's such a huge gulf, it's obvious!
Pete Waterman (British Judge): And you're the racehorse by the way! (Kelly laughs)
Simon Cowell (US Judge): Yep.
A relieved Kelly had this to say afterwards "I'm glad I came out on top as the racehorse (laughs). I don't think my mom would have appreciated the donkey comments!"

Before entering the Belgian Idol competition Peter had the unusual job of helping rennovate Brussels' drains. He also turned out to be something of an unusual idol as his musical genre is "heavy metal" and he looks every inch a rocker with his long locks and goatee.
In his early audition one of the judges challenged him, "You're more rock than pop", savvy Peter gave a good enough answer "What is Pop? Pop is whatever sells!" which helped take his heavy metal solo onto the next round.
The Belgian public had no problem with Peter's image and made him their "Idool" (that's how they spell it!). Since winning the contest back in May 2002 he's released his debut album "Rhubarb" to critical acclaim and has recently secured a record deal.
Will his perfomance of the Nirvana classic rock the World Idol boat?
Nina De Man (Belgian Judge): Erm, at first Peter when we met you we didn't think you would ever fit the mold, and you didn't, you never did. What you did instead was carve a brand new mold, that was uniquely and typically you. I am extremely proud to be a witness to your wonderful performance.
Elias Rahbani (Pan-Arab Judge): You have all the look and you have the voice, but you have to work with your voice a little more. Ok?
Peter: Thank you very much for that advice, thank you.
Shona Fraser (German Judge): I'm a fan of Nirvana, I think you sang the song well, but I think you'd sing it better with a band. You have a band, you do your own thing, keep doing that. This isn't the place for you.
Simon Cowell (US Judge): This is the weirdest show I have ever been on in my life. (laughter) The show is called World Idol, we have the Lebanese music advisor telling somebody doing a Kurt Cobain impersonation whether he's any good! I'm not being rude, but I mean it's just so weird! This would be Kurt Cobain's biggest nightmare! (laughter) It is, because you are conforming and rock 'n' roll is about not conforming. So therefore, you are a Sheep in Wolf's clothing.
Peter: So a rock band doesn't make any CD's, because that's selling out?
Pete Waterman (British Judge): If you were serious you wouldn't be on this show...
Peter: I'm very serious about my music, but you guys made it this way. The industry made it this way that young artists can't find another contract anymore. Where I'm from. (cheers)
Pete Waterman (British Judge): Hang on...if that's true how did we get Kurt Cobain?
Simon Cowell (US Judge): He did it through being real.
Pete Waterman (British Judge): He did it because he worked 9 years.
Simon Cowell (US Judge): Even if you were to come on this show...
Peter: Who are you to judge me for being unreal actually?
Simon Cowell (US Judge): Well, I've got an opinion!
Kuba Wojewodzki (Polish Judge): (jumping up and down) You're bloody good! You're bloody good man!
Pete Waterman (British Judge): Shut up!
Simon Cowell (US Judge): If the only supporter is the guy from Poland it says it all!...Sorry.
Peter: Well I respect you're opinion, that's no problem there.
Simon Cowell (US Judge): We'll agree to disagree.
Peter: Okay
Simon Cowell (US Judge): Thank you.
Peter: We don't have to agree.
Simon Cowell (US Judge): We don't have to.

Will was the first Pop Idol of them all, winning the first UK series at the beginning of 2002.
Will made an impact during the UK contest not only due to his outstanding singing talent but also because he was the first contestant to take issue with judge Simon Cowell (who at one time labelled him 'distinctly average'!) and come out on top.
Since his win Will has had tremendous success with 4 UK No. 1 singles (the most recent just before Christmas 2003) and Album sales topping the million mark.
Will performed 'Light My Fire' for the judges, a song which fared well for him during his UK Pop Idol campaign.
Would the judges be as impressed this time around.
Kuba Wojewodzki (Polish Judge): You're artistic choices tell me more than your voice. It sounded like Mr Bean singing Jim Morrisson. If I was part of Morrison family I would sue you. (boos)
Will: (smiling) Thank you very much!
Henkjan Smits (Dutch Judge): Will, at first I thought you can't touch a Doors song, but this is not about someone doing Jim Morrisson, you made it your own song. The way you do it, the way you perform with your laid back timing and your bedroom eyes...make you a superstar.
Will: Thank you.
Pete Waterman (British Judge): Now Will...
Will: Hello Pete.
Pete Waterman (British Judge): Now the question is Will, do I go completely over the top here like all the judges have for their nations. Do I have to tell people how brilliant you are? No! No because one thing you do Will...you tell them how brilliant you are every time you sell more records than anybody else in this competition. You're the only person that's had 2 No. 1 albums. Everybody knocks this competition because they said we don't find real talent. You have disproved that, you've lasted and you go from strength to strength. All Brits in this audience are proud of you mate!
Simon Cowell (US Judge): I'm going to have to apologise that you've had to listen to this moron from Poland judging you. (Kuba twiddles his pen between his mouth and his nose!) No but I'm serious because I might as well have hired a tortoise, because you (Kuba) are just moronic! I had to get that off my chest, back to you (Will)...erm the fact that went ahead in your own time and delivered by any standards a superb album which has sold well and has been critically acclaimed means that you deserve the right to stand on stage in a competition called World Idol. And to give you credit Will, you've done it your way, and you've been right more times than you're wrong. Erm, even though I'm an American tonight I'll be British for a moment. I'm proud to have you standing up and proud to be associated with you. Well done.
Will: Thank you very much Simon.
Straight after the performance Will met up with presenters Ant and Dec, he was asked how strange did it feel to come back and once more take on board the comments of the panel of judges, "I do think it's a good thing for the ego...because you form, everyone forms a bit of an ego and I try and keep my feet on the ground but sometimes it's quite good to get up there and people go...I can't say that word can I?...you're 'dreadful'. And you know you've got to take it and say, you know, that's your choice, and I think for me that's kind of been one of the biggest things, it's good for me and it keeps my feet on the ground.

When ex-plumber and dad of two Kurt turned up in for his first audition he was told "your singing is terrific, but you're not a Pop Idol". But Kurt was to make a lie out of that statement.
As the charismatic Norwegian moved on in the competition the public took him more and more into their hearts. They crowned him their Pop Idol and his debut single went on to become the biggest ever selling Norwegian single.
Would the World Idol judges' initial reaction be the same as that Norwegian judge, or would his incredible vocals and trademark gappy smile win them over?
Jan Fredrik Karlsen (Norwegian Judge): Well of course the Norwegian people have every reason to be very proud today. Er, for me you'll always be an underdog. You're an underdog here today, it's a small country, but you by far have shown the best voice, the best personal voice, here today by a man on stage. It's just fantastic. I'm really, really proud. Thank you so much.
Ian Dickson (Australian Judge): Kurt, you're a hell of a marketing challenge, because you have the voice of an angel but you look like a hobbit. (Kurt smiles) In fact if we were looking for Middle Earth Idol I think you'd ba an absolute hands down winner. But for World Idol I think it's going to be really tricky. I really find you enormously appealing though. There's a goodness in you and an honesty in you that I just cannot help but like, so just keep on doing it, because I think what I saw today was terrific, well done!
Pete Waterman (British Judge): You came on there, you controlled your voice I think better than anybody else in this competition tonight. You really controlled it. You enjoyed it, you didn't go off and you gave us, I thought, a superb performance, and you're our little dark horse. I think people at home are going to like your performance.
Kurt: Thank you.
Simon Cowell (US Judge): Kurt if this competition was on radio rather than TV you'd walk it. What has occurred to me watching this competition tonight is...and don't take this the wrong way because it's not meant to be...we've allowed a lot of ugly people to become recording artists. (groans) Which is fine! My point is under normal circumstances you would never get a recording contract. You know that and I know that. You have an astonishingly good voice, and along with Pete, I think you could be the dark horse to win this!
Kurt: Thank you.
Post peformance Kurt had this to say "It made me really nervous being last, so I just went around the building ten times singing the same song over and over, warming up my voice. So er...yeah, it's going to be a beer now!
