Susanne came through the wildcard heat along with Sam, and like Sam she is emerging as one of the front runners in this competition.
She has a unique and emotional delivery, and has chosen songs that expose her vulnerability, which has only enhanced her appeal to the viewing public. She has even been able to move Pete Waterman to tears (though Simon might be a harder nut to crack!).
After coming third in the earlier heat Susanne took up an internship with the BBC, she told the Reading Post "I'm in the governance and accountability section, researching various charities". No longer in the backrooms of the BBC, Susanne is now on ITV in our front rooms and her Pop Idol prospects are currently looking very good indeed!
01.11.2003 (Theme: Songs From Your Birthyear)
Susanne was born in 1982 and from that year she chose the Yazoo hit "Only You". Susanne was casually dressed, wearing an off-the-shoulder top striped in blue and brown. She sang her song well, but without the same emotional intensity of previous performances. The sound balance in the studio can't have helped. The heavy backing music was booming over the vocals. The panel acknowledged this but nevertheless she received quite a mixed reaction.
"This is a complete pure pop song and you even managed to sing it brilliantly as well" said Foxy.
Nicki too was impressed "I couldn't quite hear you but I like the way you play with the tune you make it your own each time".
Pete couldn't really tell how Susanne did! "You sounded good but I couldn't really tell because ...(of the)... sound in the studio".
Simon was far more forthcoming. "You just had a look of horror on your face... That was awlward. It was average, it was your weakest performance by a mile."
25.10.2003: Once again tonight Susanne impressed the panel, this time singing Alanis Morisette's 'Ironic'. There was nothing Ironic about the panel's reaction to her. Pete thought she was "bl**dy marvellous!", Nicki told her "you 100% delivered", Foxy said she "nailed it" and Simon described her performance as "class". Nicki later added "I think today we saw 'Susanne' for the first time. She was very comfortable...last week I said to her 'we haven't seen what's inside' and I think tonight we got it from her"
18.10.2003: Second chances don't come often and Susanne was ready to grasp this nettle with both hands. She sang Rod Stewart's "I Don't Want To Talk About It" with great emotion and received a whacking endorsement from the public, coming first with 27.2% of the vote. She moved Pete Waterman to tears and Simon Cowell said of her performance "Tonight was all about Susanne, she was head and shoulders above the rest."
20.09.2003: Susanne impressed the judges during the heat with her unique version of the Erma Franklin classic "Another Little Piece Of My Heart", she also impressed the public gaining 16.1% of the vote. Unfortunately for Susanne that wasn't quite enough on the day, she trailed 2nd placed Brian Ormand by 0.7%, while her Pop-Idol pal Kirsty polled 19.9%. Susanne showed good spirit, and appeared genuinely happy for the pair.
