Sam Nixon

Age: 17
From : Barnsley
Star Sign: Aries
Sam has made it through to the final 12 by winning the wildcard show, but the combination of his voice, his enthusiasm and cheeky grins have catapulted him into the front running. Sam's also a bit of a Jamie Oliver. He kept his promise of baking a cake for all the finalists, and they all seemed to approve.
Sam has impressed the judges with his classic tastes in music. "He's a real mus-o isn't he" said Nicki Chapman. Charlotte Church is high up on Sam's list, although as Sam conceded that's not really all about the music. When Kate Thornton reminded Sam that Charlotte attended the previous Pop Idol final, she must have given Sam all the motivation he needs to go keep going in the competition!
Foxy keeps telling us about the emails his radio show receiveing in support of Sam, which is one of the reasons he was chosen for the wildcard show. He is unquestionably popular and has a growing fanbase. It looks like second-chancer Sam is now in with a real chance of scooping the big prize!
01.11.2003 (Theme: Songs From Your Birthyear)
Sam took the stage to sing Cindy Lauper's 'True Colours', a hit back in 1986 when he was born. As he finished he gave the audience that cheeky smile of his and he faced the panel.
Foxy wasn't impressed with Sam's vocals, which he felt lacked emotion, "You've got a great voice, you've got a lovely smiley face but no emotion in that for me."
Nicki somewhat disagreed, "Another consistent good vocal from you Sam. Erm, I like the fact that you picked a different type of song to sing, you didn't twinkle as much as you usually do for me, but I still think the vocal was good."
Pete had some advice for young Sam "what they're talking about is certain songs...you can't change the key, because it's the key that gives it the sparkle, and when you bring that song down to your key, it just takes off the sparkle. It's not you, it's just the song, okay. Learn that!"
Simon seemed distinctly unimpressed! "Honestly Sam, if I'd just seen that one performance...I'd say it was average with a capital A, no spark...flat!". (boos from the audience!)
Sam took it all in his stride. He told Ant and Dec "they're just giving criticism and you've got to take it on board".
25.10.2003: 'Handbags and Gladrags' by the Stereophonics was Sam's song tonight. He sang it well but the panel questioned his song choice. About the song, Pete said later that it was "a good song but not a great song" and Simon said that Sam was better in the rehearsals. Nevertheless Sam got enough public votes to see him safely through to the next round.
18.10.2003: Sam looked very happy to have made it into the wildcard round and as he sang the Mike And The Mechanics number 'Over My Shoulder' . We don't know exactly what chunk of the public vote Sam polled this week because he was saved by the judges.
27.09.2003: Cheeky Sam sang 'Walking in Memphis' and was well received by the judges. He received 19.4% of the votes which on another week would probably been enough to get him into the final 12, but Sam found himself in 3rd place behind Marc Dillon and Roxanne Cooper in a very strong heat.
