Mark Rhodes

Age: 22
From: Darlaston, Walsall
Star Sign: Virgo
This cheeky-chappie from Walsall used to work in Sales and Administration for a Walsall steel supplier. He may have quit his job in September, but he's continued to deliver steely performances in front of the Pop Idol panel!
His mum has joked that he's not very bright, but Mark has definitely brightened up the rehearsals with his cracking sense of humour.
Mark is determined not to return to his day job, he's already told his local newspaper the "Express & Star" that whatever the result "it's going to be full time singing for me now"!
01.11.2003 (Theme: Songs From Your Birthyear)
After last week's close call Mark was hopeful that this week's song choice of John Lennon's 'Imagine' would serve him better. Singing such a well-loved song is always risky, but he gave an assured performance and sang the song in his own style.
Foxy seemed to think it was a performance of three thirds, "I thought the first bit was really good, the second bit you tried too hard...but it ended good.".
Nicky thought this was a better week for Mark, "I think your confidence is there Mark this week, well done!".
Pete Waterman was satisfied too, "Let's be honest, busting song. That'll do me son."
Simon Cowell proved more difficult to please "Everything I've seen so far tonight is really, really dull ...Was it a great performance? No, no, no it wasn't (boos for Simon who shrugs his shoulders) it was 'alright'."
However, Mark forced a smile out of Simon when he balanced things up with a piece of self-appraisal "I totally agree with you but I thought the song that I chose last week was silly, the song I chose this week was pretty daunting, but I thought I coped with it okay".
25.10.2003: Mark chose a difficult song tonight, U2's "With Or Without You" and he received a mixed reaction from the panel. Foxy began with "not a good song for you, but you sang it well". Nicki was the most positive "great voice, last round was great, you showed a good range" and she praised him for trying something different. However Pete told him "I think that you've put yourself at serious risk of going out of the competition" and Simon agreed adding "last time you were amazing, but you'll always be second best to Bono".
When the results arrived Mark found himself in the bottom three, but happily for Mark he wasn't one of the unlucky two to go.
11.10.2003: Mark's performance of "She's Like The Wind" got him into the final 12. He attributed his success to his lucky 'stud muffin' pants. Despite being branded as 'dull' by Simon Cowell he came second to Andy Scott-Lee on the night.
