Marc Dillon

Age: 22
From : Essex
Star Sign: Libra
Scot Marc, originally from Livingston in West Lothian, is a confident performer with a great voice and a great image. He is well remembered for his emotional reaction upon reaching the final. Touchingly Marc cried out for his Mum, who was abroad in Spain and whom he feared may have missed the show. Since then he's had a few ribbings about those tears but happily he finds it quite amusing himself!
Just after reaching the finals Marc received some negative press regarding an assault which he was involved in 5 years ago when he was 17. Marc confronted his past in the press and said "I've grown up a lot since then. I am a different person now". Pop Idol Judge Nikki Chapman supported Mark to the press, saying he'd paid his dues and it would have been unfair not to allow him to continue in the competition.
01.11.2003 (Theme: Songs From Your Birthyear)
As Marc bounded onto the stage full of beans, his mum and girlfriend were in the audience cheering wildly for him.
Marc selected Kool and the Gang's Celebration from his birth year (1980). It's a very upbeat number and the set lighting transformed the stage into a disco inferno. Dressed party-smart in brown T-shirt and jeans, Marc seemed to enjoy himself and had the audience clapping along. How would the judges react?
Foxy seemed happy, "Great way to start the show, you did it well", though he also remarked "you don't have to do the greatest vocal performance for that record because it's such a great song".
Nicki too was positive about the performance, "you really perform to the audience, you really know how to own a stage", but less so about the choice of song "one thing I would say is that choice of record...I don't think it suits your vocal I think it's a difficult range for you to sing in".
Pete had a different take on things "You can't sing that song, you were absolutely lifeless".
Simon told Marc he had a problem "no-one's going to remember you tonight after that song".
Marc's mum's head sunk into her hands as he acknowledged Simon's comments saying "That's fine, not a problem at all".
Simon disgreed "Well it is a problem"
"Well it is for you", Marc retorted.
"Not for me, for you" said Simon.
Unhappily for Marc, Simon's words were prophetic and he didn't poll enough votes to make next week's final 8. There were none of those famous tears from Marc tonight, he was philosophical about his fate and had no regrets. "Wow, this has been the most amazing experience!" said Marc and as he signed off from the show he thanked both his fellow contestants and the viewers at home.
25.10.2003: Marc gave an great rendition of 'To Love Somebody' (originally by Michael Bolton). He impressed the judges, especially Simon Cowell who, having seen all the performances, singled him out as the best on the night, describing his performance as 'superb'.
27.09.2003: Marc sang The Commodore's 'Easy' and made getting in the final 12 look easy! He netted 28.5% of the public vote and cried those famous tears for his mum!
