Kim is out to challenge the idea of 'what is a pop-idol'? She's a mum of 3 and a bit larger than the norm but has consistently impressed with her singing talents. In the early auditions Simon Cowell branded tongue-studded Kim as having no personality, but he has admitted he was wrong and calls her fantastic!
Pete is perhaps undergoing a similar change of mind. During the final 100 auditions Pete remarked, "How many people who look like that have you seen have a top 40 hit?". While he still defends this stance, "My argument was she's not a pop-idol, I didn't say she wasn't talented..." he does seem a little more enthusiastic now, "I think she's superb at what she does...tonight she smiled and you can't, when somebody does that you can't knock that can you? It would be stupid to say she wasn't good tonight, that would be stupid....daft I am, stupid I may not be". Could Kim be gradually winning Pete over?
01.11.2003 (Theme: Songs From Your Birthyear)
Looking great in a silky purple top and black trouser bottoms, Kim hit the stage with a beaming smile and showed us some moves as she sang the uptempo 1979 Donna Summer hit 'Hot Stuff'.
Foxy wasn't so sure about Kim's performance, "My only worry is that you're doing these big, sort of 'belt 'em out' club anthems and...does that make you a bit of a one trick pony?" He acknowledged that the performance was good but added "it didn't blow me away".
Nicki enjoyed the performance "you do know what you suit and that is big numbers, big uptempo numbers... I like the fact that each week you're doing it different as well Kim, that's good!".
Pete warned Kim that she could go too 'karaoke', "These sort of numbers are pure karaoke. Nobody can argue that so far you're the best we've seen."
Simon seemed almost disinterested. (Maybe the jetlag was catching up?) With a shrug of the shoulders he said "I don't really have much to say, really, you know, its alright, good, well done!"
Despite being pleased with her performance, Kim found herself in the bottom three and was relieved to escape elimination from the competition.
25.10.2003: River Deep, Mountain High was Kim's song tonight, and even Tina Turner would have had a job impressing the judges more than Kim did. Pete called it a 'superb performance', Foxy described her as 'brilliant' and 'sassy', Nicki said 'the song is karaoke but you pulled it off' and even Simon Cowell conceded "I accused you of having no personality, I take it back, you 100% deserve to be here, fantastic!". Kim was understandably pleased, after the performance she told Kate Thornton "It was just amazing, I know the song and I felt comfortable with it, so, it just felt fab, and I actually got a compliment from Pete Waterman!".
04.10.2003: Kim wowed us with her version of the old Dusty Springfield hit "Son Of A Preacher Man". She achieved second place in the heat with 19.7% of the public vote.
